Scott’s right, because around that time, Cathode Ray Tubes were becoming so obsolete that TV stations stopped being compatible with them. Buying an HDTV is not “frivolous” at all – it’s either that or buy an adapter that distorts images. It was a necessary purchase either way.
It’s not the inputs. Games that were originally designed for CRTs, do not look correctly on the newer flat screens. For similar reasons, the controller inputs are not timed correctly so games that require precision, are almost unplayable

Nowadays you can’t even give CRT TVs to thrift stores any more.
Gamers want Crts for their old consoles and computers that connect to a tv.
I have a flatscreen TV which has way too many hookups, including the ones for old consoles.
