First off, I am an old-school vintage Star Wars fan. I had almost a hundred novels, and could tell you who Addyr Nykklyera was in a heartbeat, because I loved his storyline, brief though it was.
Then Lucasfilm took all the old canon, renamed it Legends, and put out a bunch of different stuff because expecting people to care about 15 years of books and comics is too hard when dealing with a 35 year old franchise. Lucas himself drove the New Jedi Order into the ground by refusing to let Akakin Solo be the hero because Revenge of the Sith was coming out.
Second, it’s called “fanon” for a reason — it isn’t canon! The popularity of someone’s fanfic doesn’t make it part of the series. (cough — Sequel Series — cough) Fans want stories that grow the world and characters they love in new and different ways. Fanfic is fine, and I’ve written a few myself. But “Hiccup dies in the movie, and Astrid ends up marrying Fishguts and secretly riding Toothless” isn’t anyone’s story but mine.
