Oh, I remember this one. This story had the biggest post count of any Retail storyline! So many readers were utterly *livid* with this arrogant customer!

And yet if I said ‘in five minutes we will release the hounds’ I’M the jerk.

I had a manager refuse to make closing announcements. He thought it was rude.

Hey, technically the customer’s not doing anything wrong. The announcement was “at your convenience”. šŸ˜€

Grumbel’s should really operate like the big red box I worked for does. Tell everyone individually that we’re closing in 5 minutes at that time, keep track of them, turn the lights off, and if anyone’s still in the store, make them go up before the registers close. Everyone was out at 10 after. (We also had a separate cleaning crew contracted out.)

ā€œAttention shopper, is now closed. Thank you and have a good night.ā€ That was my closing announcement when I was a manager. It got people moving

Don’t use the words “At your convenience.” She’ll take that to mean she can stay there all night if she wants. Do what Val did once. Go do a lot of very annoying suggestive selling. “Do you want a shirt to go with those pants? How about a tie? Socks? Shoes?” Keep yapping in her ear until she gives up in frustration and leaves!

When I worked at OfficeMax, we were forbidden from corporate to make closing announcements. One Sunday I broke that rule, at 7pm when a family was just trying on sunglasses at an endcap, and I got on and said “Attention, OfficeMax now closed!”

That announcement was almost verbatim how I would page out people still in the store.

Our manager was a fun one tho so let us get “creative” after 30 min.

Sometimes I would add after the time, “And we would like to go home now.” Or on my more wicked days, “And the hounds have been released.”
