If only things had actually worked out that way when a zombie apocalypse actually hit…

People like to fantasize about the end of the world. No one wants to actually experience it. It’s why zombie fiction took off, because it presents an apocalyptic event with ever-scaling danger and gives us a group of survivors to root for.

Me, I hate zombie movies, but it’s because it’s a completely over-done trope. It’s time for vampires and werewolves to take the spotlight for a decade instead. Seriously, you want to up the stakes on surviving an apocalyptic situation, either of them would be a good choice. Vampires may be weak to the sun, but they attack when we naturally want to sleep. Werewolves, depending on the lore you go with, can be downright devastating.

After all, you have the inherent risk, like zombies, of infection with werewolves, where bites and scratches have to be taken very seriously. While zombies are generally portrayed as slow, stupid, but difficult to destroy, werewolves are fast, intelligent, and generally rather difficult to kill. If we remove Hollywood’s typical “All monsters must have a plot-sensitive weakness” from the equation, shifting by full moons and silver become moot points. (I, personally, prefer my werewolves to shift as they please, and silver merely slows their rapid healing, making them easier to deal with.)

More importantly, however, is that Vampires and Werewolves are both, in a way, pack hunters. Vampires typically have a clan, werewolves typically have a pack. Zombies are usually a horde all looking out for themselves only. Somewhat like customers, I suppose. Maybe that’s why I hate zombie movies…

There are worse apocalypse movies than zombie flicks. Watch THREADS for example.

No, wait, on second thought, don’t watch it. Just read any synopsis of it and that should cover everything.
