was just thinking. my sister does -alot- of reading, and spends like $1000 a year on books alone. most of them she reads once then never looks at again. is there any kind of like…video rental store but for books? would make things alot cheaper, plus once one person has read one the next person can get enjoyment from it etc

Supposedly submitted by “Selekta” to a forum.

In the 70s and 80s, it would have been a good business model to have a “paid” library that guaranteed immediate copies of high-demand, new-release books. Now? Libraries have ways to trade books with each other more than ever, eBooks exist, you can check out a different book while waiting for the next one since there are literally billions of them, and video games and streaming whatever TV show or movie you want compete for your entertainment dollars.

All that said, bookstores are still VERY much a thing where I live, and I’m not totally sure why but it’s cool.

There are a couple of websites where you can request an electronic copy of a book, you have it for a month and then lose access. The problem is that there are so many different publishers that copyright issues make a lot of books only accessible in certain countries.

People…Old Wolf was making a joke. What Selekta was looking for was a library.

It’s a good thing libraries predate Amazon (originally they did books) or they never would have existed at all.

I miss having lots of bookstores everywhere. I used to like bookstores that had, I don’t know, lots of books. Its not the same if the bookstore is half Starbucks, with the other half in games, models, and collectible anime.

Just go to the library and read it for free. You may have to wait if it’s new and a bestseller but they usually have a lot of copies of it. You put it on hold and when it comes in you can read it. You just have to be patient and willing to wait. Libraries are great. What would us low income avid readers do without them?
