That’s called “wage theft,” Stuart, and it would land you in jail.

If Marla pointed that out, I’d imagine Stuart’s response would be something along the lines of “Only f the staff reported it to the authorities” said with a tone of disbelief that would happen.

“Pfft, they wouldn’t do that, because they’re so fortunate to be on our payroll.” or something similarly nonsensical. Who would be loyal to an employer that doesn’t compensate them properly? Nobody, that’s who. Stuart doesn’t understand.

This deep into 2009, management everywhere was beating the “you are lucky to even have a job at all, you should be grateful that we rip you off” drum.

The biggest grocery chain in my home state was sued for millions for wage theft.

I had to quit a job for this very reason. Only job I ever quit! Around 2002 American Greetings started cutting our hours but we were still expected to get all the work done. Only now it was impossible to get all the work done in the few hours they agreed to pay for. We weren’t allowed to tell the store managers about having our hours cut, we had to take the blame and promise to do better. After a year of work getting backed up because I refused to work for free, they cut our hours yet again! Then the DM told me he could give me another store but it would be the same story. I could make the same money as before but working twice as many hours. Skip that! I quit!
