Even though I’ve worked retail, I have (and yes, I am ashamed of this, but coming clean is part of the healing process, so I’ve heard) actually told someone during one of those pushy upsells, “If you ask me, one more time, if I want anything else with these three items, I’m leaving.”

    They asked, I left.

Am I proud of it? No. Did I feel better? A little.

Dude, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You set a reasonable boundary, they stepped over it, and you stuck to your guns. As long as you didn’t make a big stink at the time, you did everything correctly. If anything, you oughta be proud of yourself.

(full disclosure, when I worked at the Canadian bookstore chain, we were expected to attempt to bundle multiple items with every conversation with customers. I literally never did so unless it was, say, recommending further books in a series or what-have-you. I feel you.)
