Warranties are nothing more than “extra profit” for the store.

One of my proudest moments – and my wife’s most embarrassing. Going into a chain electronics store to buy a work-quality laptop, case, spare batteries because I needed one for the next day. The spotty dweeb in the store kept asking over and over and over about the extended warranty. I got angrier and angrier. Eventually my wife begged “Please, stop asking, he’ll just walk out and I’ll have to deal with his anger for the rest of the day”. The dweeb took my payment card and asked me for the 14th time (yes, 14 times) whether I was really sure about the extended warranty. I totally lost my rag screamed at him where to stick the laptop, snatched my card back and stormed out.

I walked straight into the independent consumer electronics shop next door and said “I need a laptop, now, and if you try to sell me an extended warranty I’ll walk out like I just did next door.” They did not say a word, just took me to the laptops, let me choose one and all the accessories I needed, took me to the till, took my money and smiled sweetly. Not a word. And they got about £1,450 off me.

I have since been told a few times the dweeb in the first store would not have cared one bit as they got no commission on the extended warranties, also their markup on electronics goods is so low that selling them without the warranties is sometimes at a loss so the management would not care either.

Oops, missed a bit. So what the first store was selling was actually worthless extended warranties at 100% profit, with the electronics goods as loss leaders just to get the punters in.

Sounds like you were the one with the issue here. Dweeb was just doing his job. Its so fun to get yelled at by some jackball for that.

I’m gonna disagree with Jerry there. Fourteen times is absolutely excessive, and would infuriate ANY customer. STU-MAN says at various points in the strip that you have to hear a firm “no” three times before you drop it. Having to say “no” three times is annoying enough. This is nearly five times that, and it makes Stuart look reasonable, which is an accomplishment. I don’t blame NNW at all for flipping his lid. This “dweeb” should’ve stopped after three times, and especially after NNW’s wife was blunt with him. Was it his job to lack basic social courtesy?
