    Almost every manufactured product is much less expensive than it once was, and the main reason for that is people relentlessly pushing to reduce costs. (Sample: books used to be mostly for the rich — ordinary people couldn’t afford to buy them routinely. There’s a reason why the family Bible was a treasured possession, carefully protected and passed down from generation to generation, and it wasn’t just the sentimental and religious value. People had scrimped and saved for years to be able to buy it!)

    Yeah, it’s often overdone in shortsighted ways. That’s one of the roads to bankruptcy…
