I can’t figure out if Stuart is just busting Marla’s metaphorical balls because that’s what his mentor, Jerry, did (although Jerry probably never gave Stuart any shit because he was a man instead of an inferior female), or if he’s just doing what he things a District Manager is supposed to do.

It could go either way, especially considering that this kind of “management” is the only skill that Stuart has ever been shown to know in the almost 7 years that the strip had been running at this point. I could see Connie or Gary giving Marla kudos for making plan in a tough economy and for keeping the store ship afloat after only taking over halfway through the year and after returning for maternity leave. They would use that good news to lull her into a false sense of security for dropping the bomb of payroll cuts that would happen regardless (because, as District Managers, they would have no choice but to implement the cuts that came down from on high, as the CEO simply says “I want to give myself a 2 million bonus this year. Accountants, make it happen”)
