The small community library I volunteer at has an easier system. We count all the books on one shelf in a section and then multiply by the number of shelves in that section to get a number. We do it that way for every section. Inaccurate to say the least? You bet. Do we care? Nope. Why do we bother since we don’t keep track of books going out or coming in? I have no idea.
