    Honestly, I had never even heard of people including a receipt with a gift. You don’t return gifts.

      Most retail stores will give you a “gift receipt” for you to include with someone’s gift if you ask for one. It’s a less-detailed version of the receipt you keep for yourself, but it still allows the gift-getter to exchange the item at their convenience or alternately exchange the value of the item for a gift card.

      I’ve only ever returned a small handful of gifts, one being Christmas ’23 because people had gotten my daughter three of the exact same thing.

      Gift receipts are common, especially for clothing. If you buy someone a sweater that ends up not being the right size it’s way nicer for them to be able to exchange it for the correct size (or even a different sweater that suits their style better) rather than making you have to do it for them.
