I think that’s largely because she’s “not successful” in his eyes. And maybe because he’s still not over her lying to him about making her income from writing for magazines, instead of from a department store.

I think nowadays most people just pay for their own weddings with whatever help the parents can give. It’s just as well if he doesn’t pay for it. Too many times parents think if they lay out the money they get to dictate the details of the wedding and that’s wrong. I agree with Val that it’s better to have a more modest wedding and save the money for either a great honeymoon or a house down the road. A wedding is for one day while the marriage should hopefully last the rest of your lives and having a nice home is more important than just one day.

Yeah, my parents helped a bit, but it didn’t amount to much since our entire wedding was a total of about $8,000. We tended to go with options that ended up *being* cheap, but without *looking* cheap. His parents helped the most by letting us reserve the gorgeous venue in their name. We still paid for it, but since they lived within that city’s limits, we got it for ~40% off the normal price. We got married 13 years ago and that building even in 2024 would only cost like $2,500 to rent it for 12 hours on a Friday or Saturday. Any other day of the week would be like $960 (which is still more than we paid) for 12 hours.
