I agree with Marla on this one. Most companies have a standard of behaviour that they expect you to keep to. In most real world places Cooper’s behaviour would have found him getting warnings left right and centre and eventually fired. He in the earlier strips is very immature. He absolutely does need to start acting more professional.
A lot of people don’t seem to understand that “professional” and “fake” are synonymous.
Fork that. I’m gonna be me, and anyone who has a problem with it IS the problem. I understand Cooper’s attitude entirely and agree with it. He and his crew can have fun even though he’s management so long as he gets the job done.
I feel it’s different in two ways. First, Marla didn’t insult Stuart directly, she insulted the company for making unreasonable demands. Her frustrations were about the situation, and if the situation were different, Stuart would be Stuart but with a different set of rules.
Cooper always insults Stuart directly. He pranks Stuart and makes it harder for Stuart to do his job. Cooper also leads other employees to disrespect Stuart more overtly. In a military situation, that could rightly be called mutiny. But Cooper always does it for his own gratification. Marla wants to overturn a bad system, Cooper just revels in the system being broken enough that they can’t cavalierly fire him.
Second, Cooper owes Marla big time. She’s gone to bat for him for years, defending his antics as part of a competency “package.” Now that Stuart is largely absent from Cooper’s daily life, he should have toned down his resistance to the top, because now he’s testing Marla’s previous benevolence. Everyone likes Cooper, and no one wants him gone. But he’s always one step away from losing everything Marla gave him.
It doesn’t feel nice to begin understanding your old managers perspective does it.
