As I said ages ago, on the old site, people hyped up the revenge plot to crazy and back, and in the end, it was just this. “I’m keeping you comfortable in this dead-end job, making just enough that quitting isn’t an option, but you have no upward mobility.”
I mean, as far as realistic revenge goes, it’s very reasonable, but comic revenge? It was pretty much a let down, even for people like me. I didn’t want to see Cooper fired, but I was hoping that the revenge plot was going to be Marla’s store having the worst shrink percentage in a long time, possibly “breaking records” bad, and Cooper would either get fired or demoted. That would have at least been ‘comic level’ revenge for Retail. Also would have still been realistic.
Yes, I think a lot of us were disappointed in the plot. But it is an interesting commentary on life – it’s too easy to be “comfortable” and not do what needs to be done to move up to a better life. Sucked as entertainment, but a good gift for those who needed to hear it.
I agree that this is certainly not a very interesting revenge, and it was probably due to all hype.
But I really like this way more framed another way. Imagining Sanzen actually wanting to get a big revenge on Cooper and climbing the corporate ladder to do it… Only to feel that it was kind of pointless and deciding that just climbing was what he wanted. Basically, himself outgrowing Cooper. He just gave him some token revenge becasue he felt like it.
Which would also be a foil for Cooper in this situation. Sanzen improved his own life by just moving forward and just no longer give any imporance to Cooper. Exactly what Cooper should be doing for improving his own life.
Misery is comfortable. Kill your excuses, or they will kill you.
This has to be the lamest revenge in history. “I’m keeping you employed and even got you a raise and benefits. Muhahahaha……”

It’s silly as real revenge goes too.
