Most retail stores will give you a “gift receipt” for you to include with someone’s gift if you ask for one. It’s a less-detailed version of the receipt you keep for yourself, but it still allows the gift-getter to exchange the item at their convenience or alternately exchange the value of the item for a gift card.
Gift receipts are common, especially for clothing. If you buy someone a sweater that ends up not being the right size it’s way nicer for them to be able to exchange it for the correct size (or even a different sweater that suits their style better) rather than making you have to do it for them.
Honestly, I had never even heard of people including a receipt with a gift. You don’t return gifts.

I’ve only ever returned a small handful of gifts, one being Christmas ’23 because people had gotten my daughter three of the exact same thing.
