Acronyms don’t take their pronunciation from the words the letters come from. Laser, scuba, POTUS, and NASA would all sound different. Gif is its own word.
Language takes on the most commonly preferred pronunciation, and it’s not really as equally weighted an argument as some people like to say.
Which is why the JIF camp generally relies on stuff like “That’s how the creator says it’s pronounced” while the GIF camp leans more to “This is how people in the real world talk.”
Exactly GIF sounds better than JIF, when used in normal conversation. It doesn’t matter what it was “originally”, when it was instantly changed in public usage.
Your comment scares the hell out of me. I pronounce all of those with the letters that the words came from. So does everyone in my STEAM upbringing. My guess is that you’re either from the South or the Midwest Adam. Am I correct?
OORRR Maybe you just ‘think’ you’re pedantic, but don’t actually understand how words are formed; therefore, you Regularly mispronounce words and think you’re ‘better than’. That’s possible too.
Keep being wrong! And we’ll keep pointing it out and then making fun of you xxoo
That’s interesting. I wonder if you know that words and pronunciations evolve over time – or if you care.
Probably not.
Be simple, Rain. Keep being simple.
Don’t be a gackass, Donny.
Donnie is correct. Whenever someone pronounces it incorrectly (like Cooper), it takes me a minute to realize what they mean.
Graphics. It’s GIF

What a weird reply. No – to every assumption you made about me. Say gif how you want, I really don’t care.
Jif is a peanut butter.
Jif is a cream cleaner for particularly baked on scrubbing.
‘graphics’ is a hard G.
Donnie is the Anti-Christ.
Ugh, here we go.
It’s pronounced gif, like in gorgeous.
People take this so seriously. It’s like a Jihad.
Or a Gihad. I don’t know.
The guy who invented it said it’s “Jif.”
But Donnie, don’t act like a know-it-all, even if you’re correct.

It’s GIF, and I’ll die on this hill!
