Fact of the matter is, common core has been very successful in teaching children to do math in their heads. People of a certain age and mental inflexibility dump on common core for the same reason they dump on many “newer” things – because it’s all strange and unfamiliar to them.
I feel smart and stupid at the same time… I was able to do the calculation that the shirts were $5.10 cheaper than usual, but at the same took awhile to realize she’d somehow misread 30 percent as 30 dollars, so the joke didn’t hit me for awhile.
This is two years too soon to make jokes about “common core,” but it would end up leading to the same kind of obtuseness and innumeracy.
