In real life, Marla would have bailed on Grumbel’s years ago. It was established that the pay was poor, the benefits average, and the work environment was toxic.
I always wondered why Marla, Cooper, and the others stuck around so long other than that the comic needed to continue and if they all left we’d have new characters who would also hate their jobs. But in the end (SPOILER!!!) they all do much better.
I wish Arthur came back as a guest to stop by and say hi. Would’ve been a good way to examine conflict between those who got out and those who didn’t.
I have a theory that maybe he visited them during between the strips, that might be plausible.
