The city I used to live in in Michigan had 3 department stores within about 3 blocks, a Meijers, a K-mart and a Walmart. I knew someone who worked at Meijers who said if a Meijers employee was caught shopping at either Walmart or K-Mart it was grounds for instant termination. I thought that was ridiculous and should be illegal. All department stores don’t carry the exact same merchandise. And I don’t believe your job should have the right to fire you over what you do in your off hours. They only own the hours you’re on the clock, not your off hours. They have no right to tell you where to go, what to do, who to see, etc. on your off hours.
