No, you’re scheduled until the end of your shift. If they schedule you until 9pm, you can leave at 9pm. They don’t get to make you stay later (and probably not pay you for it).
Huh? Have you not worked in retail? You don’t get to go until the store is cleaned, the shelves restocked and tidied, front facing completed and the supervisor checked that’s all done.
That should really be done during your shift, at least it was in every shop I’ve ever worked in.
We were supposed to face the shelves and sweep the floors stating at 5pm ready for 8pm closing whether or not delivery was done.
15 minutes after closing we’d be out of the door with alarms set, cash counted and front displays brought inside unless the store had been absolutely ransacked.
Yeah, same for me. When I worked at the big red box, we had a separate, contracted cleaning crew take care of the floors, and we cleaned up any messes that arose while on when we were scheduled. If your shift ended when the store closed at 10, that’s when you left. Any messes were deferred to the next day unless they were pressing.
Yeah, when I worked waiting tables I was usually scheduled 3:30 PM – “Closing”, which if we were super slow meant service stopped at 8:45 and I was gone by 9, or if we were super busy the kitchen stopped serving at 10 but I might have customers until 11:00 and cleanup/close till 11:30.

Honestly, without actually seeing the schedule, it could fall into one of two camps:
They’re scheduled until midnight or something with the manager having the ability to send them home early if the job is completed before then.
The schedule has their time listed as something like 4p-Close, to leave it as a sort of open ended “You’re scheduled until you’re done” kind of thing.
