“We figured it was best to remain open for customers like yourself.” Complete truth and shows a degree of support for them… while simultaneously throwing huge shade.
When I worked for the Big Boy restaurant it was Mother’s Day and one of my coworkers told me that a customer had told her that they should’ve given all of the mothers the day off. She told them that if they’d done that there would’ve only been 2 waitresses to wait on everybody. Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year in the restaurant business. They really would’ve only had me, I was still single then and the other single girl didn’t work on Sundays.
The other story goes like this. There were 2 churches near the restaurant and many of their people came out to eat after the Sunday service. They would leave their church tracts instead of tips. My coworkers were disgusted with this and rightly so. When I let it be known to these people that I was a Christian they wanted to know why I worked on Sundays instead of going to church. I told them that Sundays were the busiest day of the week because so many people (including church people) came out to eat so there was no way I could get the day off. They never put it together that they were part of the problem!

If people like you were not shopping then I would not need to be working.
Today I got “I can’t believe they’re making you work outside in this heat!” as someone dropped a ‘donation’ off to my thrift store.
