They are still very much in use. For most goods the tag is a disposable one that’s hidden inside the product. There are magnetic pads built into the till to deactivate them.
I hate how a lot of stores just have self-checkouts now because those do NOT have a way to deactivate the security tags. So the alarms are always going off due to items that were paid for moments before, which makes folks pay even less attention to those alarms.
What really used to crack me up was what would set those damn things off that had nothing to do with merchandise. For example, a customer once would make it sound just because he had hearing aids. At one point, I would set it off with my cell phone, but *only* if I was on an active call at the time.
Those security tag detectors seem to have gone the way of the dodo. I can’t remember the last time an employee had to remove an ink tag for me.
