Well, it is from 14 years ago. And based on Norm’s experience prior to the strip.
It would also depend on if the store is granted a security officer. I worked for a big-box about five years ago that had one security officer for three stores, and a fourth store in the area that didn’t get one. The stores were roughly the same size.
In January 2020, an employee of a Best Buy in Hawaii was fired for blocking a would-be thief from running out of the store with stolen merchandise. He had just grabbed something and was running. She wound up tackling him.
Based on what you all are saying… I now wonder why some stores don’t have security teams. You think they’d learn from how others have made it work. The payroll ends up helping keep the store profitable and safe, plus customers can find what they’re looking for. And lawsuits hardly ever happen… especially if there’s tape of the plaintiff committing a crime. Who’s gonna let photographic evidence say “I stole it” to a judge?
I can understand letting security/loss prevention do the confirmation. They’d get training for it. But the losses have to be high enough to warrant paying for them.
This seems dated to me. From my experience working at a big-box mart, security busts shoplifters on the regular. Probably depends on the retailer.

Definitely depends on the retailer. My store operates like this and we have no security officer…so yeah… we have problems
Depends entirely on the store. Some stores except the occasional lawsuit as the cost of doing business. Others don’t.

Yes, she got fired from Best Buy – and then the UFC hired her for a security position. No doubt a move up for her.
Heh, no. This is still a thing in 2021.
