Strictly speaking, the Mayans made a calendar that ended on December 21, 2012, and people interpreted this as predicting the end of the world, presumably because they hadn’t gotten it out of their systems in 2000.
People took it seriously where I live due to the weather forecast… we got 21 inches of snow in 36 hours around that day, so it certainly felt like a real apocalypse. Can’t recall another storm quite like it.

To think that was over 10 years ago! I remember it well.
The Mayans were right, they were just about 7 to 8 years early.
