At least Marla’s store should be safe. An in-story reason is that she makes her sales goal more frequently than many other stores, and while they may not be as lofty of goals as Southbridge where Brick came from, it still means the store is more profitable than ones that aren’t as well-managed. In reality, Norm was never going to close Marla’s store until Grumbel’s corporate bankrupted the company (aka when he was ready to retire – two years later).
I’d love to see a story where Grumbel’s has to change into a smaller more family friendly style, and Stuart is the one trying to adapt to the new status quo.
Everyone should be updating their resumes and keeping an eye out for new opportunities regardless of their position or career. The only constant in this world is flux.
