Most places that I’ve shopped at with rewards programs do, in fact, deduct any points you earned when you return something. I’m not against the practice myself, to be honest, as it keeps things a bit more even and prevents people from taking advantage of the program.
IIRC Kohl’s had a loophole that if you returned something that got you rewarded cash, it invalidated the reward cash earned

Our Kohl’s has an Amazon return kiosk and they’ll give you Kohl’s cash for returning stuff there. An interesting perk.
