Yeah, national security vetters don’t get given references, they do their own research and find anything you don’t give them. As my manager kindly let me know while I was serving customers on the front desk with my colleagues.
“Hello BritishBlitz87, a man from the government vetting service is on the phone. He wants to know if you’ve ever used a prostitute or joined the Communist party. Just thought you’d want to know, I said I don’t think so but you never know, you know?”

I’ve only been asked about references for a part-time retail job that did not matter at all.
I’ve never been asked for a single reference for jobs that required security clearance and technical expertise.
