To be fair, corroded charging ports do happen, though it’s more about the customer keeping the phone in the pocket of a wet coat than anything to do with shipping.
Huh. I didn’t know this could happen. It might actually explain some charging problems I’ve had with my tablet. That, also combined with the fact that it’s at least half a decade old and I’m not the most gentle when putting the charger into the port.

I’ve found a slim needle (sometimes a pin if I can find it) on hand to clean my phone’s USB port. Not even compressed air is enough to clean it out…
