I’m told to do the opposite at my job because the more time we spend leading customers the less time we have to do everything else. I have had days where helping customers took up enough of my day I couldn’t get anything else done so it’s not unreasonable but I do lead people if they insist they can’t find something too. “They told me not to” isn’t really a good enough reason to not put in the effort and it would actively look bad.
Yeah it’s like when I worked at a restaurant and we always gave the customers water but found that most weren’t drinking it. It wasted our time and the dishwashers had that much more to do so we stopped giving them water automatically and put on the menu that if they asked for it we’d serve it. Very few did.
