He had quite a few around the time Marla became manager, he used to actually tell her well done a lot when she managed to meet plan or fulfil corporate’s lastest diktat. Then he gradually went completely, fanatically pro-corporate to the point of being a total dick for no reason. I think when he actually has to hang around the store where he is kept out of the snake-pit of office politics and faced with the reality of the shop floor, he mellows just slightly.
It’s probably been discussed in the strip and/or comments before, but what if they waited until Stewart leaves, then fill in the display with other suitable products they actually did get?
You shouldn’t lose points in either scenario since neither are things you have control over. But idiot Stuart seems to think you can just manufacture it by magic like Samantha twitching her nose on “Bewitched.”
The greatest benefit to the firm would be to display literally any merchandise if what’s required is not available. The greatest benefit to Marla is to display nothing. This means the firm is measuring and incentivizing actions that go against its best interest. Marla is right – it’s horrible thinking and 100% the fault of corporate management.
One of the few times Stuart had a moment of humanity!
