Apparently dungarees is another term for overalls. Also; in a Ranger’s hat and shovel, and a pair of dungarees, you can find him in the forest, always sniffing of the trees.
Originally “dungaree” was a name for a type of cotton cloth, much used for heavy work clothes like overalls and jeans. By extension it came to refer to the clothes as well, especially (but not exclusively) overalls.
Dungarees – (British, apparently) (1) a garment consisting of trousers with a bib held up by straps over each shoulder, made of denim, corduroy, or heavy cotton and worn as causal or working clothes, (2) a coarse hard-wearing cotton fabric
I had never heard of Dungarees either and I’m in my forties.
Dungarees and jeans are very much NOT the same thing.
I’ve only heard Dungarees used as a brand name of jeans, like Levi’s.
