However, after many a complaint from both customers and staff about a stock of 1 or 2 likely meant we were actually out our managers said we could tell customers “our inventory says we still have 1 or 2, but it could be wrong. I’m going to check the back, but be prepared for me to come back empty-handed.”
That method worked surprisingly well for disarming potentially hostile customers.
Having worked in retail, now that a lot of store websites let you see how many units they have in stock, if a site says they only have 1 or 2, I’ll go to the store prepared to find out they actually don’t have any left.
