A college degree is important, of course, but we all have to start somewhere.

That may not necessarily be the case. For decades people have told their kids to go to college and that’s caused an upward spiral in tuition, bazillions in loan debt, and a society of businesses that require a bachelor’s degree in order to do all but the most mundane and menial labor. Furthermore, many if not most schools don’t do the necessary counseling to guide students into a career path anymore, so you end up with thousands of students a year deciding to spend enough money to buy a house on a major they haven’t picked yet. Figure out what you want to do, then go to college with a plan to make it happen.
BTW, I speak from experience. My parents forced me to enter college before I was ready and I flunked out. My wife got a degree in philosophy without anyone ever mentioning that it was useless in a job market, and five years after graduation realized she could have become an accountant instead and made $50k+. (Her professor told his students “You can do anything you want with a philosophy degree.” She still hasn’t figured out what she could do with it.)
My wife adds: “Don’t take career advice from anyone who went to college so they could stay at college.”

The professor was right. You CAN do anything with a philosophy degree, because it’s so useless that you have to take a different career path!

To start with, we need to stop lumping everything together as “college degree”. Some will earn the money, some will not.

Amber should say very loudly “For your information I AM in college but the tuition doesn’t pay itself. Maybe your daughter will have to take this kind of job to get through college. Unless you intend to pay for it yourself Daddy big bucks?”
