One of my favorite jobs while working at grocery stores was hunting for misplaced items. Sometimes the customers were quite inventive with the locations they used. You never know where the sneaky customers have hidden your prey!
I was simultaneously amused and horrified by some of their choices.
I once saw a cereal box on its side and when I picked it up, noticed it was much heavier than it should be. Turns out someone removed the cereal and put a two-pack of steaks in it. I assume they were planning to steal it, but couldn’t go through with it for some reason. I’d like to think it was because they felt bad about it, but that’s not likely. They probably just noticed the cameras or maybe someone was watching.
I’m thinking they might have had an accomplice. I’m not sure as stuffing stakes in a cereal box is a criminal charge – only when they went to buy/leave the store with them. So they put them back with the plan of coming later to just “buy a box on cereal”.
Yeah, they put them in there so they would pay the price for the cereal. Probably had a customer or employee walk by. Once had a customer try to do that with a car seat, only they put a different display car seat in the box. Almost got away with it, until the alarm tag got detected. Worst part was, the car seat they tried to sneak out was far cheaper than the one they actually paid for.
The truth. At long last, the truth.
I meet grocery stores halfway… I pick up the discarded items and, if they don’t need refrigeration, drop them off at the service counter.

When I was a cashier someone decided they did not want something while they were checking out and put it on top of the candy.
