“Cinco de Mayo” just means “May 5th” and it’s curious how that day gets celebrated as part of Mexican culture. You’d think September 16th – Mexico’s Independence Day – would’ve taken that honor instead of something (the Battle of Puebla) that was only celebrated in 5% of Mexico before the 1980s. Shows the power of advertising…. and the allure of excuses to drink alcohol, since that’s what did it.
Originally, May 5th was mostly celebrated outside Mexico since their Independence Day was hijacked by the then-ruling party and ex-pat Mexicans were trying to get away from them.
I’ve been getting the “National Day” posts in my email and some of them have 10 different National Days. Why should Courtney think there can only be one? I guess because she’s a brainless airhead.

Only later advertising took over.
True but there are a lot of summer holidays. May is a nice time to party.
