I’d probably have invested more effort in all the upsells (warranties, the fake rewards card, credit card offers, etc) at Lowes if I were rewarded/paid/compensated for them in any real way.
when I worked at a sporting goods store, certain vendors offered incentives for selling their products (you could build up “credit” that you could use towards wholesale purchases of the same products). One of those incentives was a sort of contest. We had 4 months to sell as many of…I think it was 4 different product lines and each line was eligible for a certain amount of money, but you had to have proof you sold it, so you had to print duplicates of the till receipts.
It worked out brilliantly for that vendor, because our store pushed the shit out of those product lines, because everyone wanted extra money. It all came crashing down at the end when we were tallying up our receipts and the store manager told us that we’d all have to take our winnings as store credit. I don’t remember why, but considering everything that’s happened in this strip, it was probably because our SM didn’t want us to spend that hard earned money somewhere else (or, god forbid, we pay rent and bills with that money)
Granted, it also helped that the vendors that were offering these selling incentives were selling good stuff, so none of us ever felt bad about leading with them just so we could get something out of it.

At Kmart in the late 90’s we got a commission on any extended warranties and anything over $100.
Just because she’s cynical doesn’t mean she’s wrong.
