And now Marla’s starting to see that the reason Stuart was training Josh was indeed so he could be an ASM… but instead of Marla losing her job, she’d be promoted, too.

What’s nice is that Stuart actually seems excited about this. It’s always nice to see his humanity, because that makes him a more complex antagonist.

Well…Stuart’s original plan was to train Josh to be assistant manager, and then take over for him when he got promoted, so Marla would be stuck at assistant manager. That’s why Stuart was also training Josh on the stuff he did. Stuart’s boss Lara’s displeasure at Jerry’s treatment of female employees changed that plan on the fly. If nothing else, Stuart’s a corporate survivor.

But I agree there seems to be some geninue happiness from Stuart in delivering the good news.

I’m reminded of an episode of YES. MINISTER where Hacker and co. was trying to, genuinely but still rather patronizingly, open up promotions for female government employees.

Exactly! He had to be put on the spot by the Regional Director in order to offer up Marla as an immediate replacement for his role, but now that it’s happened he’s genuinely happy about it (even though honestly, most of his happiness likely comes from the fact that HE’S getting a promotion, but he’s also able to let his happiness spill over into being happy for Marla as well).
He’s still a jerk most of the time, but he’s a way more interesting character than Jerry is, due to this complexity.

At least Stuart is genuinely happy here though!

I agree with Andy. This is why Stuart is a more likeable character than Jerry.

I’m glad it worked out this way thanks to Lara. Otherwise Josh would be manager and Marla would be stuck at AM. And this would be so hard to take after all the other insults she’s had to endure. Josh was only hired a few years ago as Christmas help and he’d have risen to store manager while Marla was the one who worked so hard. Sort of like the movie “9 to 5.”
