Ah yes, those things. They didn’t last very long. People didn’t understand how to use them, they required maintenance, they were germ-spreaders, and it made shoplifting – both intentional and accidental – considerably easy.
I also remember this very strip being where many people, myself included, found out about their existence.
Now a lot of stores have apps that you can use to check yourself out the exact same way on your own phone. My husband and I use that all the time when we go to Sam’s Club.
It never occured to me before, I could bag my items as I go like Marla does here — as long as the barcodes are facing up, I could use the hand scanner at the self-check and be done faster.
Unfortunately the self checkout things in the last panel did catch on. Then they spread exponentially. I hate those things. Stores should hire cashiers and give enough payroll hours to keep tills open.
However, now it appears that stores are having a hard time filling those jobs. I went to a Taco Bell that had a sign at the casher directing people to the kiosks for ordering.

This didn’t work at all. The ‘random’ checking process tagged way to many people, which held up the line at the ‘fast’ lane.
It’s the people who let their small kids scan the items that irritates me to no end.
