Whenever I am in line and I hear another customer deliver this joke, I watch the cashier’s reaction.
It’s like a part of their soul dies.
Always be afraid of the cashier who doesn’t show a reaction. That’ll be the one who completely loses it.
I got a verbal warning once for responding to “it must be free,” with, “No, it means I can charge you whatever I want.”
The look on her face was priceless. The store manager’s face, less so.
