It’s always nice to get praise from someone who doesn’t give it out easily. It’s not nice if that praise is nothing more than an insincere motivation tactic. And it’s empty if you get that praise every single day.
I had a feeling similar to Marla’s years ago when I received an “Atta Boy” certificate. I doubt anyone who has ever received one of these would give one to anyone else. It may just as well have said “Whoop De Doo.”
I taped it to the wall in my office. My boss took this as evidence that he’d sufficiently rewarded my hard work and skills. But every time I saw that on the wall it reminded me I needed to find another job.
“Atta Boy”?! That’s as bad as the customer who said “Good girl!” when I helped her! You don’t talk to fellow human beings the same way you talk to dogs! That’s demeaning and disrespectful.
As an RN, I now have subordinates. I do my best to thank them for their hard work every shift, because I could not do my job without them. They appreciate it.

How about being called “hey Wal-Mart Dude?”
Please tell me when you quit and the boss asked why, you just handed him the certificate and said “Woof.”
