I love that Marla isn’t just a perfect self-insert. One of her flaws here, she’s got a bit of ageism which comes up (and gets challenged) from time to time.
That does not change Marla’s poor choice of words, acting as if he can’t possibly run a register. Yes, she’s training him to do the job he was hired for, but isn’t it part of his job to be a backup on registers? Why not have him shadow you to the register and you point things out to him, then he takes over when the line dies down? Train him to eliminate the one valid “no” reason.
Just starting to go through the archives this morning; huge thanks to Norm for getting this website up and running. I’ll be telling everyone I know so they can also enjoy his work. <3
He ought to be grateful he’s getting training. The Co-op put me on the till and the supervisor walked off the floor and left me to sink or swim. The first customer wanted scratch cards – that needed a special process which i did not know and got told off. The next wanted help getting something off the shelf and when I left the till the supervisor came running onto the shop floor and shouted at me. Later I got told off for not using the microphone to call for help when the queue built up – but nobody had told me it existed and was hidden in a drawer.

She’s also training him on the job that he was hired to do…. on his first day. Funny that. What a /weird thing/ to do.
