I love the whole “meh” attitude of the cashier 😆. That’s pretty much been the vibe I’ve been seeing in the retail world lately, and I’m completely ok with it.
Every retail store — high-end, low-end, and in-between — gets the same kind of fools. That’s why so many of us loved “Retail”, because we who worked in customer service could relate to the characters, having been through the same scenarios.
We’ve all dealt with other versions of Creepy Guy and Crazy Hat lady, as well as the flim-flam artists, shoplifters, snobs, sign non-readers, restroom wreckers, arguers, screamers and the constant repetition of “it must be free!” And it’ll be that way until the end of the world.
I just finished reading the entire run of Retail and it is amazing how many of the strips I remembered in detail. To discover a Dollar Admiral strip after is so great!
Does anyone else want to see Stewart broke and having to work as a cashier at Dollar Admiral? Maybe the pension fund was misused by Grumble’s and went under? Sigh…
I didn’t realize it at the time, but “Coming Soon Dollar Admiral” had two meanings. As the store replacing Grumbles in the “Retail” world and a potential new comic from Norm!
Are there more of this? Or is it just the single strip?
I would love to see a follow up one were Marla is in Dollar Admiral and her item does not scan just to see how the automatic reaction happens for her. . . .
The vest is probably the Dollar Admiral uniform, and he has to wear a collared shirt with it. It just happens to look like Han Solo’s outfit. Now, if he had a blaster strapped to his side…
It’s November 23, 2022 right now as I type this, and I just learned from the MSN site about the Walmart shooting in Chesapeake. As morbid as it sounds, this reminded me that, of all the trouble and negativity that happens in and around modern stores these days, that RETAIL never had some kind of arc about some manner of gun-related event. I wish it had though… perhaps a reflection of the fallout of such a tragedy would have dissuaded similar occurrences in real life.
I keep reading this over and over. Did dollar admiral ever go anywhere? And I’m sorry they canceled Gil on you. Have to admit didn’t like it as much as retail tho
Dollar Admiral must be like Dollar General, they also had everything cost exactly $1, $2, $3, etc. I think $4 was the highest at the time I moved and there isn’t one where I live now. They had some nice merchandise. But they’re not a Dollar Tree or a Dollarama.
I think “Dollar Pagoda” was Norm’s takeoff on Dollar Tree (ofc now it’s “Dollar-and-a-Quarter Tree”); I tried running through other plants and it just didn’t scan.
Currently running through the Gil strip archive on GoComics and enjoying that as well.
Are we going to see any further dollar admiral strips? Or is there a possibility of getting some OCSS (Original Comic Strip stipends) of how Marla is doing in her new office job, and Cooper at the warehouse job he snagged, also Val and her writing career. I’d love to see what Lunker is up too, along with the other secondary comic strip cast members, who did the close out of Grumbles. And of course last and certainly most wanted 🙂 Has Stuart finally been outed for being such a incompetent and boorish idgit. It be great to see these even if they were just one offs or once a month on the retail strip website. I’m certain many of us would enjoy seeing the gang again. I know I would.
I wish Norm Feuti would do an update on the Retail gang. Strange that so many including myself are so attached to this strip that we long for news on Marla, Coop, Val, and Lunker.
Read back to front..I’ll make it a yearly tradition. Found this comic when I was working in a paper print house. Back in retail now, being my best Marla. World’s in such a weird place.

brilliant
So happy to see this new comic, and the archives! Can start from the beginning! Thank you so much 🙂

Can’t honestly say I blame him.
Nor can I.
Heck yeah
I like the detail of the customer’s nose hanging out
Do you think a nose that big could fit behind a mask?
Nice to see it back…and you of course.
Brilliant! It goes to show what they know because a real lawyer would never abuse their power to get their way.
Funniest comment I’ve read today.
So true. They’d just blindside you with the subpoena when you least expect it.
Kel- no. A real lawyer would have too much class and money to even shop at this store!
That was supposed to say Mel, not Kel.
A new Retail comic 😃
Agreed. However an epilogue to the old Retail would be great. I recall that DA was at the old Grumble’s store site.
I’m not sure a dollar store qualifies as “retail”. 🙂
It does. Whatever each of us thinks of it, it still does.
But I’m thrilled to see you back!
This doesn’t feel any different from Grumbel’s clientele tbqh.
Also it’s good to be back!
The more things change and all that.

I did not expect a spin off of the original Grumbles comic
(squeeing noises)
He’s baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
YAY!! the return of retail!
Oh my god, I started at the beginning and totally missed this.
I would love to see a revival 🙂
Seriously? It’s Christmas in May! <3
And pull your mask up over your nose, Moron.
They never helped.
Yeah, they did.
They still do. And it’s the people who won’t wear one who are prolonging the pandemic.
Yes, they did. They also helped with other things, like filtering out pollen during springtime.
The people who talk governments out of keeping mask requirements in place are also prolonging the Pandemic.
Also liking masks for dealing with pollen or dust overload in general.
Hey, did anyone try the website listed on this strip? My computer’s security software says it’s an insecure connection.
I own the dollar-admiral.com url. It’s set up to redirect to this comic.
On another note, I would happily pay for every issue of Retail if it were to come out in dead-tree edition. You know, in your spare time. 9_9
Same here! If you ever publish a collection, I’ll be one of the first customers.
Welcome back Mr.Feuti… looking forward to the new adventures at Dollar Admiral.😊

That is the dream reply to the lawyer comment.
I could cry. How true to life this is.

Thank you for this, and for putting Retail back online. And making it in the first place.
Love the edit on the last Retail strip to lead into this, Norm.
Was it an edit? Other people don’t seem to be treating it as one.
Are there more of this? Or is it just the single strip?

I’d have rather seen Josh as the clerk. Brice as his boss.
Why is the cashier dressed like Han Solo?
Why not?
The vest is probably the Dollar Admiral uniform, and he has to wear a collared shirt with it. It just happens to look like Han Solo’s outfit. Now, if he had a blaster strapped to his side…
SCSI
No doubt Norm still hears this dozens of times a day but, damn, I miss Retail.
That was a great archive binge!
I would love to see a ‘Where are they now’ Comic with the entire regular cast. I just finished rereading the entire comic and would love to know.
Me, too. Norm?
I like this comic so much, this is the third time that I’ve read this. And after a month or so, I’ll start all over again.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I would buy the entire collection if it came out in dead-tree edition. It will never cease to be relevant.
I miss the characters. I just binge read all of Retail (again.)
Candle still lit for Retail and its potential successor over here. <3

Is this strip referencing the one from June 6 2006?

“If it didn’t scan, it must be $1.”

One thing though is that you usually don’t find Dollar Trees in malls.

If they’re anything like me, they’re hoping at least the fictional retail workers will have a happy ending because in real life we never do.
Man, what a trip through memory lane.

But be strong friends, we’ll make it I hope.
